The magic formula for Talladega races
In the past weekend, Nascar fans had the opportunity to see what we is called the WILD RACE of the chase, where everything, but really everything can happen.
So it has been over the years, drivers no matter what, being the bravest at the front of the pack or being conservative in the back, the truth is, sooner or later, they would ended up being caught in a situation, made by them or not.
Examples of these situations are many, just remember last year’s race in October, in which Tony Stewart trying to block Michael Waltrip, ended up creating a mess such that decimated half of the pack, so whatever happens, accidents will always be part of evidence as Talladega or Daytona.
If you click HERE, easily you´ll remember that I am right.
Therefore, these oval accidents are inseparable, it is not a question of where or how, but when it will happen.
But it’s not just accidents, the only attraction in these type of races, the speed and the way they go together, it´s also absolutely fantastic, by the way, those were the first reasons that fascinated me when I first saw a race in Talladega, a few years ago when i saw the legendary Dale Earnhardt competing in the Cup Series ( on tv ).
Therefore, accidents, speed, how to “race” and uncertainty about the winner, are the common denominators in tracks such as Talladega and Daytona.
Unfortunately in this formula, the word competition is not always associated, instead drivers are able to walk 170 of 188 laps, just riding along until they feel “tight”, then they know that if they want to have a good result, they have to fight for it, at that point in time, already 2 hours of “racing”, have ben gonne.
I can understand drivers way of thinking, they are just protecting themselves, but as a racing fan, i want competition and i do not care if A or B are fighting for the championship and if C or D, want to show their new sponsor , fans deserve competition from the 1st to the last lap.
So, because Nascar thinks Talladega must remain in the schedule of the Chase as the SPECIAL AND THE WILD ONE, why not give it a twist that makes it really special, it´s very simple!!
Just give a point to the leader of each lap of the 188 laps of the race, now the driver, whatever it is, would have at it´s disposal 188 points, 4 times more than the usual 47 for victory in a normal race, that would be sufficient to place the 13 th overall driver in the championship back in the hunt, but he would have to fight for the leadership of the race lap after lap.
Also the other 12 chase drivers would see an opportunity here to return to the championship, for others, get away with it, not to mention the 30 drivers, who want to bring the trophy home, as was the case of Jamie McMurry this year.
Want more competition than this!!!
What would be the result of such a race?
At least, a lot of competition, lots of confusion and probably half a dozen cars at the end of the whole race.
Would it be fair for those leading the Chase?
Probably not, but I’m not’m a driver, i, as a fan, i want a real race, whoever it hurts, after all that’s what led me to “pay” the ticket.
Would it be a fair scoring system for Talladega, in relation to other 9 Chase races ??
At first sight no, but isn´t NASCAR that gives to Talladega the attribute of a wild race, special and different one
So be it.
Competition is what really matters, not only for the fans but also to NASCAR that sometimes tries to hard to protect it with the yellow flags.
There´s a final point, the security, after all the accidents would increase exponentially don´t you think ??
For that matter, do you think that drivers are concerned about their safety when there are only 15 laps way from the finish line, what they want is the trophy if they are caught in an accident, that’s part of the game, always has been and always will be, let Nascar worry about it, making cars safer and more resilient arrange railings to prevent debris flying into the stands, they, the drivers, are there to compete for the check and the points, not to mention the risk always made and will be part of the game.
NASCAR could use this unique points system in all events that take place at Talladega and Daytona, without forgetting the lower categories, the Nationwide and Truck Series.
Faced with this new competitive scenario, would we see again Talladega and Daytona races with empty seats like in recent in years??
