Sam Hornish Jr sem volante para competir em 2014

Até custa a acreditar, mas é verdade, o piloto que em tempos foi campeão da Indycar Series e vencedor das 500 milhas de Indianaplis, não tem lugar na equipa para quem sempre competiu, a Penske Racing.

Hormish momentos antes de se preparar para mais uma corrida

O problema é sempre o mesmo, seja na Nascar ou Formula 1, português, americano ou inglês, masculino ou feminino, quando faltam os €€€ ou $$$, é certo que alguém vai sofrer, por muito talento que se tenha e Hornish tem-mo com certeza.

O mais arrepiante de tudo isto, é que Hornish, em tempos um ás ao volante dos monolugares da Indycar, nem sequer quis conversar com Chip Ganassi, que anda à procura de um piloto que substitua a vaga deixada pelo também grande Dario Franchitti, que não vai continuar a sua carreira de piloto depois dos médicos o aconselharem a parar de vez com a velocidade.

Só para relembrar, Sam Hornish Jr veio para a Nascar em 2007, onde fez umas quantas provas na Nationwide Series, participando ainda, nas 2 últimas corridas do ano na Cup Series.

Entre 2008 e 2010 competiu a tempo inteiro na Cup para em 2011 e por falta de patrocinadores, ter de a deixar, competindo em algumas provas da Nationwide, sempre com Roger Penske.

Em 2012 e 2013, competiu a tempo inteiro na 2ª divisão da Nascar onde obteve o seu melhor posição de sempre, um 2º  lugar este ano, perdendo para Austin Dillon o titulo de campeão por apenas 3 pontos.

Ficam as palavras de Roger Penske, logo após a prova de Homestead, onde ganhou o titulo dos donos de equipa através do Ford nº22:

“To see Sam race at the level he did with Kyle, right there all night, shows what a great racer he is,” Penske said. “My issue with myself is I started him in the Cup level with no practice. One of the greatest open-wheel racers we had in IndyCar. I think maybe I started his career backwards.”

“I think he’s going to have a chance to drive something next year. A couple things out there look quite promising. I would support him always. He needs to have a good ride because he’s a quality guy, a family man. Remember, he won an Indy 500 for us. That’s pretty special.” But Penske told the 34-year-old Hornish he needs to be racing in the Cup series, where he doesn’t have a spot for his longtime driver.

 “There’s a lot of uncertainty at this point in time, but I feel as if we’ll be able to make something happen,” Hornish said. “But, like I’ve said in the past, it’s all about trying to position me to move forward in some way. I don’t want to take any more steps backward or be in something that’s not going to give me the opportunity to go out there and be competitive and have an opportunity to at least run in the top 10. It wouldn’t be optimal to run a part-time schedule, but it might help me out. I might be able to go and do testing. I might be able to learn a lot of other things and to be able to forge forward and to be even better in the next go-round.”
